After seeing a Valentine’s special for Kombucha Brooklyn on a yoga deal blog, I’ve started brewing Kombucha. I am capturing the process of things over on my Yogacentric category on AvantGarland.com so you can follow along if you like. I have two posts so far.
You can find out what articles I’m using, see pictures and supply lists and more in my kombucha Evernote notebook.
This past week I visited with Nikki who is on her second batch of Kombucha. She gave me a Scoby to take home in a baggie.
I took some pictures of her bottling and adding flavors to her 2nd batch while we sipped on a bottle from her first. It was so smooth and yummy!
An Instructables tutorial says about brewing Kombucha:
Brewing the kombucha tea is a simple process of boiling water and sugar solution, adding and steeping the green or black tea. Then allowing this mixture to cool to room temperature before adding the kombucha cultures. Once you have tried it a few times it will be a very easy process to remember.
Next Steps:
- Brew some tea.
- Sanitize Pickle Jar.
- Add slimy scoby to the room temperature tea.
- Cover with a thin cloth to let in air and secure.
- Let sit for a while, not sure how long since my house stays chilly.
For the first batch, my plan is to keep it simple. Just do a basic tea batch. Next time I will maybe do less sugar or experiment with different sugars. As I get more scobies, I will be able to use them for different experiments. Stay tuned!
